Khumjung School has certainly come a long way since its establishment. During the last 50 years, many of its past students have gone on to become outstanding figures whom have not only served the community but also the nation in many different ways. Several generations of Sherpa people have now had the benefit of an education at Khumjung School.
Graduates of Khumjung School have a pride in themselves, their families and their school, and the school is equally proud of them. The graduates can now be found as leaders in various fields of the community and national development. Many former students are also living and working successfully overseas, though they retain strong ties with their place of birth and education.
Many past students believe that educating the community allowed them to cope with the extensive changes that have occurred in the Solukhumbu area since the introduction of tourism. The combination of better access and the lure of Mt Everest saw a huge influx of foreign tourists to the area starting in the 1970s and continuing to this day. With the benefit of education, the local communities were in a strong position to benefit from these changes rather than be taken advantage of.
